Giraffecycle Picks of the Week – July 28

Welcome back, and enjoy our picks!

Patrick Reinartz’s Pick
Greg MacPherson – The Capital, Friday, July 29, 10:30PM

Winnipeg-based songwriter Greg MacPherson returns to the East Coast this weekend. His last album (Mr. Invitation, 2010) followed a four year gap between albums, but it seems he’s aiming to rectify that delay with the release of another brand new album in 2011. Disintegration Blues will be available this September. MacPherson will be joined in Fredericton by local favourites The Belle Comedians, as well as Cigarettes and Cannon Bros. His Fredericton gig will be followed up with an appearance at SappyFest in Sackville on Saturday.

Chuck Teed’s Pick
Mary Stewart – Somerset Pub, Thursday, August 4, 9:00PM

Mary has spent the last two summers working in Saint John as Rock It’s vocal instructor, and tries to squeeze at least one show while she is in town. This year she will grace the Somerset Pub stage, where she will hopefully captivate a large, appreciative audience (this means you, reader) with her poppy folk songwriting. Last year she was immersed in a song a day songwriting project – check it out at http://cupcakerecord-asongaday.blogspot.com/ –  so you definitely know she’ll have enough material to keep you entertained for the evening.

Giraffecycle Picks of the Week – July 21, 2011

We’re a day late, but here are Giraffecycle’s picks of the week!

Zach Atkinson – The Heartbroken – Peppers Pub, July 26

Some things take no thought, they just take heart. “Tonight Tonight”, the debut album from Toronto’s The Heartbroken might as well be a bandage for bleeding hearts and souls around the world. This latest project for east coaster Damhnait Doyle grew out of residencies at Dakota Tavern where they plugged in and played so hard, they almost fell over. Catch them with Clinton Charlton Tuesday July 26 at Peppers Pub. 10pm.

Chuck TeedThe Wayouts CD Release Party – Peppers Pub, July 22

This was a tough choice. I was initially intrigued by Carole Pope’s show at Pump Nightclub July 22, but decided to support the local guys instead. The Wayouts have been making a name for themselves lately thanks to their dancable brand of indie rock, and should pack Peppers Pub on Friday night. The Amazing Maztradamus opens the show, which starts at 11PM.

Kelly Marino’s Pick – Four – Peppers Pub, July 23

Five Seconds of Decision, your friendly local summer love-in concert series has its second instalment at Peppers this Saturday, July 23rd. FOUR features Adam Mowery, Construction and Destruction (Nova Scotia), and Troy Charles (of JetProjectLabs and Stabby Dancers). Cover is a mere 5$ and show time is 11PM.

Construction and Destruction is a low-fi duo featuring Ontario’s Colleen Collins and David Trenaman. Several years ago they moved to Port Greville, Nova Scotia and have recorded 4 albums from their living room since 2005.
