Giraffecycle Picks of the Week

Kelly Marino’s Pick – Speakeasy Film Series at the Somerset
October 17, Somerset Pub

The Speakeasy Film Series begins Monday October 17th at 7PM. Weekly screenings will feature the best in independent film with informal discussion to follow. This is a collaboration project of Cinema Politica, Somerset Film Society, UNB Department of Social Sciences, and UNB Associated Alumni. The inaugural film offering is “Surplus: Terrorized into Being Consumers”. Created by Erik Gandini and Johan Söderberg, this 2003 Swedish documentary deals with consumerism, globalization, and unfulfilled expectations.

Full programming schedule to be announced that evening.

Chuck Teed’s Pick – Tomato/Tomato
October 14, Bourbon Quarter

We have a lot of great musicians in town that fly under the radar. Take multi-instrumentalist John McLaggan, for example. He has a Masters Degree in jazz performance, toured around the world with several different artists, and taught at Saint Francis Xavier University, yet you rarely hear his name mentioned in local music circles. Luckily, he’s starting to play out quite a bit, and recently formed Tomato/Tomato with his wife Lisa McLaggan, so hopefully people will start to take note.  You can catch the duo tomorrow night at the Bourbon Quarter.
