AL Tuck releases: “Stranger at the Wake”

Friday, May 10th, 2013

Al Tuck releases his seventh album – “Stranger at the Wake” – next Friday May 17th at Taco Pica with guest David R. Elliot. Some tracks are a departure from earlier releases; a difficult thing to say when speaking about an artist who cherry-picks from rock, funk, jazz, irish folk, gospel, and country to form his unique sound.

From the press release: Many of the lyrics occupy that sweet spot Tuck has found somewhere between Bob Dylan’s self-renewing complexities and Hank Williams’ straight-shooting minimalism. The subject matter ranges from the theological to the socio-political, through the post-marital and back again. A tale told of life on the road is followed by a postcard from home. The remarkable mingles with the mundane. Al’s method-acted role here is that of a part-time whisky-tippling, loose-cannon son of a preacher man.

“I feel like we have our own living legend. And he’s alive, he’s out on tour… everyone in their right mind should just go sit and listen. He weaves slow stories from the infinite wide range of things that usually stick in the rest of our throats. We’re lucky he’s got the words and he’s sharing them.” – Feist

“Al Tuck is the real deal, a songwriter of the highest order, blessed and possessed with a double dose of the gift. Cut from the same cloth, as any of our country’s greatest: Neil Young, Gordon Lightfoot, Joni Mitchell. I’m fully aware of how outlandish and overwrought a statement this might seem, but I’ve felt this way for years now, and with every new record of Al’s, I’m further convinced. Hands down, he’s the greatest songwriter of my generation, an opinion shared by many of my peers.” – Jason Collett

Stranger at the Wake completes a trilogy of albums, preceded by “Under Your Shadow” and “Food for the Moon”.

Showtime is 8:30pm and cover is pay what you can. As with all Taco Pica gigs, I recommend you arrive early and expect a packed house.

Local 107.3fm Presents “I Love Livin’ In The Port City III”

Tuesday, March 12th, 2013

Gather ’round children, for a super special story of punk rock and fundraising: I Love Livin’ In The Port City III, to be held this March 30, 2013 at Peppers Pub…

Sometimes, on a very magical April Fools or Hallowed Eve, the grubby stardust of community radio swirls into being great counterculture and underground voices of days gone by, to play for our fair Port City at ridiculously low ticket prices and in unbelievably small venues for artists of their stature (or sometimes mortality), all to raise fund$ for your campus & community voice, Local 107.3fm (CFMH-FM).

So far we have hosted the sounds and styles of Billy Bragg, X, The Smiths, The Cramps, Pixies, The Stooges, Allen Ginsberg and Chuck Bukowski. Who will take the stage this year!?

We are happy to announce that The Clash, The B-52s, and Husker Du will be bringing their fine classic sounds to Saint John in just a few weeks’ time for the small sum of $8.

Jenn Grant: Tickets on Sale NOW

Sunday, February 24th, 2013

It’s been quite some time since the beautiful Jenn Grant has visited the fog city. She flits into the Sanctuary Theatre March 21 with Cuff the Duke, touring in support of her latest album “The Beautiful Wild”, released on Six Shooter Records last September.

The album is an all-grown-up departure from the girly charm of her Juno nominated sophomore record “Honeymoon Punch”. Join her in the deep, dark woods,  in pursuit of the elusive human heart. From JennGrant.com:

“The new record is about finding the courage to lose oneself in the wilderness, in all of its savage and sublime experiences.”

This PEI songbird once held a well deserved spot on the Polaris long list, besides having  been featured across Canada in newspapers, magazines, and television. Grant has also toured heavily across North America and Europe, sharing stages with the likes of Fesit, Josh Ritter and Ron Sexsmith.

Tickets are $26 (taxes and surcharges included). Physical tickets went on sale Friday February 15th at the Sanctuary Theatre and Backstreet Records SJ, while online tickets are available here.

Greetings! From Gumdrop Mountain: The Play

Monday, February 18th, 2013

Saint John Giraffecycler and writer, Jordan Stewart, released a nifty book of short stories entitled, “Greetings! From Gumdrop Mountain” way back in 2010. You can catch the play by the same name at the Saint Thomas University Black Box Theatre (Sir James Dunn Hall) in Fredericton, February 21st-23rd.

This is an authentic New Brunswick production, presented by the Next Folding Theatre Company. Eighteen local actors, including Caleb Marshall, Len Falkenstein, and Sam Kamras, bring this harrowing tale to life with help from eye popping special effects and live, locally composed music.

The facts are these: When a train derails outside of the normally peaceful town of Gumdrop Mountain, the local inhabitants rally to rescue survivors of the crash. A boxcar containing hazardous materials explodes and kills many of the rescuers and passengers involved, and the town is forced to deal with the aftermath of the event. In the two years following the disaster, the tragedy and grief of the community manifests itself in strange and uncontrollable ways, forcing the Gumdrop Mountain Police Department to respond with brutally unorthodox tactics.

Surreal and at times disturbing, “Greetings! From Gumdrop Mountain” is a collection of stories I’ve revisited again and again. I can’t wait to see it in live action.

Each show begins at 8PM. Tickets are $15 for general admission, and $10 for Students/Seniors. Tickets will be available at the door.
