Saint John Giraffecycler and writer, Jordan Stewart, released a nifty book of short stories entitled, “Greetings! From Gumdrop Mountain” way back in 2010. You can catch the play by the same name at the Saint Thomas University Black Box Theatre (Sir James Dunn Hall) in Fredericton, February 21st-23rd.
This is an authentic New Brunswick production, presented by the Next Folding Theatre Company. Eighteen local actors, including Caleb Marshall, Len Falkenstein, and Sam Kamras, bring this harrowing tale to life with help from eye popping special effects and live, locally composed music.
The facts are these: When a train derails outside of the normally peaceful town of Gumdrop Mountain, the local inhabitants rally to rescue survivors of the crash. A boxcar containing hazardous materials explodes and kills many of the rescuers and passengers involved, and the town is forced to deal with the aftermath of the event. In the two years following the disaster, the tragedy and grief of the community manifests itself in strange and uncontrollable ways, forcing the Gumdrop Mountain Police Department to respond with brutally unorthodox tactics.
Surreal and at times disturbing, “Greetings! From Gumdrop Mountain” is a collection of stories I’ve revisited again and again. I can’t wait to see it in live action.
Each show begins at 8PM. Tickets are $15 for general admission, and $10 for Students/Seniors. Tickets will be available at the door.
