Posted On 17-04-05 12:37:56 Subject: What local bands might I like given my tastes in music?

I raise my hand and admit I am guilty in not supporting local bands but I would like to change that. The only problem is I do not want to show up for a show just because Iwant to support the scene. I want to go to a show and hopefully enjoy the artists/bands playing. I have tried listening to a few bands already (Next to Red, Port City Allstars, 16th Avenue) and while every band I listened to were extremely talented, they just did not appeal to me for various reasons.

That being said, I am sure there are some bands/artists out there that I would enjoy but am not sure where to start who to go see. I tend to be into the so called "indie" rock/pop genre (Wrens, Modest Mouse, Death Cab,The Shins, etc.) but I also enjoy singer/songwriter styles (Damian Rice), post-rock (Mogwai, Sigur Ros, Expolosion in the Sky) and a number of other genres as well.

So based upon this information, can anyone give some suggestions on local stuff (SJ and NB) that I might like? Feel free to include links to websites, mp3s or anything esle as well.

Thanks a lot in advance.

Thanks anyway Chica.

What about suggesting local bands that are not too heavy (i.e Metal, or Prog like) and stuff that is catchy/poppy?

I just listened to 3 of the tracks by the organizaers and they did not do anything for me either. Again, not criticising their music/abilities, just that the type of music is not something I like.

Hey,
Check out Chris Durning if you like singer/songwriters, he is absolutely amazing. And the recordings we have on our site aren't good at all, live show is better but www.purevolume.com/16thavenue

On Vinyl from Fredericton might grab you: http://www.onvinyl.ca
(They tend to play an excess of guitar solos but they are really good)

The Carousels from here in SJ are great as well, but I don't think they have a web presence (correct me if I'm wrong, Clinton or somebody). They are perhaps rootsier than anything you've listed but you might like them anyway. I expect you would, because they're excellent.

And of course, if you haven't heard Throy/T. Leche/Broken Boy/etc. yet, http://www.subvertmedia.org

Also, please listen to Next to Red until you like us.

Unfortunately, there are not a great many 'indie rock'-type bands in NB at this time.

a lot of local bands take a good live show to be appreciated as opposed to a recording.

Thelema is acoustic alternative and pay particular focus to their harmonies and play original material. There are links to their music pages at Thelema. Hope you find what you like there ... they'll be playing again at Studio 112 on May 5th with Milk Mafia, on June 10th at Studio with Drift, and again on June 11th at SunSeeker

Thanks for taking a listen!

NEW MUSIC CANADA - CHRISTOPHER DURNING

Here's some of my stuff that was mentionned earlier. I'm leaning more towards alt country/Devandra Banhart style pop lately though...except I don't look like jesus. Drift's songs are thumbs up awesome fun good. Clinton Charlton, Drift, Chris Fudge, all of these guys would probably be up your alley. Like alot of people have said though, most Saint John bands are better live than in recording. Check out the Matt Pond PA show later this month. He's all sorts of pretty decent and I'll be opening for him, along with Chris Daigle (another good SJ singer songwriter). The show is April 30th at Callahans, 6 bux cover.

Look for a good post-rock pop band to appear this summer in Saint John. Unknown name thus far, but influences like Modest Mouse, Broken Social Scene, The Decembrists, The Shins, and Ted Leo and the Pharmacists.

mr. durning, thanks for the complimentary compliments; I'll check your album at new music canada asap...we've seen your live show (arts centre, paris crew cafe), the songs were nice and jazzy (the BUNK, you should def check it out). We should do a show together sometime this summer, Jen and I as an acoustic duo, along with yourself, maybe another acoustic act? watcha think?

You were saying he said he didn't like my band? Or Cliff's? I checked out Cliff's stuff and it was cool, and what I was saying was that anyone should feel free to post a link if someone is looking for local stuff. I like alot of local stuff because it is local and I like seeing musician's blossom. I wouldn't regularly listen to some of the genre's local bands around here I like fall in, but I like them cause there local. So Clifford wasn't in the wrong even if The Bunk specified what he wanted. And I read through and after I posted my link I didn't see him say he didn't like us. I don't think he even checked us out.

Thanks for all of the replies guys. I promise I will check out all of the bands listed.

As for the controversey, well I can kind of agree with both sides here. I can see why Brad would think I would not like most of the bands. It seems him and Adam are the only ones on the board that listen to the same stuff I do with a few exceptions. Also, both guys obviously know what most of the bands around here sound like.

That being said, I do not just like indie rock/pop or whatver labels. I love classic rock (Beatles, Zep), 80's alternative (New Order, Jam, Cure, Smiths), 90's Alt (Smashing Pumpkins, Archers of Loaf, Afghan Whigs, etc.) and a ton of other genres of music.

Regardless, I am not sure what I will like until I hear it. SO please, keep posting links and I promise I will give them a listen.

One last thing ( and I am sure this will cause shit) is I do not believe in buying something just to support it. For example, why would I buy an album of a local band if I did not like them? Or why would I go to a show if know I will not enjoy any of the bands playing? I know we should support our scene, but I also do not feel like throwing my hard earned dollars away just because.

That being said, I also agree that somethimes seeing a band/artist live can totally win you over. I have a feeling for example that the PortCity Allstars probably rule live, though I could not get into the few tunes I downloaded. Anyway I do hope to get out to a few shows this year (besides the out of town acts coming).

I saw birds eye view play like 3 or 4 years ago at the deep end. They played a bunch of Nickelback and Creed covers. Their moms were there.
